Halloween The Game Crossplay & Multiplayer Guide
Patch 1.0.1 fixed the documented cross-play matchmaking failure: cross-play party members now follow their leader into a matchmade lobby instead of being sent to the main menu or dropped from the party. The official announcement still does not publish a complete platform matrix, so verify your exact combination before queueing.
Start here
- Before queueing, decide whether you want online matchmaking, a party with friends, a private AI match, or the single-player story.
- In a Hero party, assign scout, escort, loot, and lookout jobs before the map loads.
- Keep voice or text callouts tied to permanent landmarks and the current escape item.
- For a cross-play party, update everyone first, form the party, make the intended leader start matchmaking, and confirm that the party remains in the matchmade lobby.
| Question | Current answer | What to check in-game |
|---|---|---|
| Can I play with friends? | Use the platform’s party or invite flow before queueing. | Invite button, party size, and join permissions. |
| Can I play solo? | The official progression article lists private matches against AI and a standalone story mode. | Whether bots fill every Hero slot and which progression rules apply. |
| Did Patch 1.0.1 fix cross-play matchmaking? | Yes. The official launch post says cross-play party members now follow their leader into the matchmade lobby instead of being kicked to the main menu or dropped from the party. | Use the current build, form the party first, then have the leader start matchmaking. |
What the 1v4 match asks you to do
Michael has a list of Special Targets and a town full of residents. Heroes have to find people, convince them of the danger, use the objects they uncover, and escort the group to a randomized escape. The match is won through objective pressure, not by trading damage in a central arena.
Heroes should share information early. Michael should create uncertainty by changing approach angles, lights, and the time at which he reveals himself.
Matchmaking, private AI, and parties
The official progression overview explicitly lists online 1v4 matchmaking and private matches against AI. Use a private AI match to learn a map landmark or the story mode to practice Michael’s perspective without promising that every live progression reward behaves the same way offline.
For a friend group, form the platform party first, confirm who is host, and then use the in-game invite or matchmaking entry. The public launch notes do not guarantee a universal lobby size beyond the one-versus-four design.
Crossplay and communication
The official Patch 1.0.1 note says the Early Access cross-play matchmaking issue was addressed: cross-play party members should follow the leader into the matchmade lobby instead of being kicked to the main menu or removed from the party. That confirms the fix for the documented failure, not every possible platform, voice-chat, or cross-progression combination.
Use this order: update every copy → form the cross-play party → confirm the leader → start matchmaking → check that everyone stays in the lobby. If it still fails, reform the party before changing roles or blaming the map.
Use a permanent landmark plus an action in every callout: “Lampkin Lane, moving a resident” is useful; “he’s somewhere near me” is not.

If someone disconnects or dies
A dead Civilian can still support the team and may return as a Sheriff’s Deputy or Dr. Loomis. Keep the route state visible to the whole party so the returning role does not spend its first minute rediscovering the map.
If a party member disconnects, continue the current resident plan only if its fallback is known. Otherwise regroup at the last permanent landmark and rebuild the route.
